Today: Tip generation. Gecko raises tips from this strategy and tests them on a paper (pretend-money) account. Strategies loop back from paper trading to be refined, dropped or replaced - only those that pass every check reach live trading.

Buys shares the day after they jump 15% or more, betting the rise carries on for the next few weeks.

The idea

A jump of 15% or more in one day usually follows real news - results, a trading update, a bid. The price doesn’t take the news in all at once: after very large jumps the shares have kept drifting higher for weeks, whatever the announcement said.

Which shares

Gecko’s original 115 stocks. It also held up on 143 FTSE 350 stocks it wasn’t developed on.

When it buys

  1. A share closes at least 15% higher than the day before.
  2. Buy at the next morning’s open.

When it sells

  1. Sell at the close 20 trading days later.
  2. Protective stop: 2.5 times the share’s average daily range below the signal day.

Worth knowing

  • The 15% threshold was compared with 10% on the full period, so the choice is slightly flattered.
